RALPH NADER TO HELP VOTERS CLAIM REBATE
WHO: Ralph Nader
WHAT: Press Conference on a tax rebate program hidden by the government,
the Standard Telephone Excise Tax Refund (TETR)
WHEN: Wednesday October 29 at 4:00pm
WHERE: Washington Post Building, 1150 15 St NW
On Wednesday, October 29 at 4:00pm, consumer advocate and Independent
Presidential candidate Ralph Nader will hold a press conference in front
of the Washington Post Building. Mr. Nader will show low-income citizens
how to claim their Telephone Excise Tax Refund in order to get back
money that was improperly taken. He is calling on the media to help
transmit the information to all people who have yet to claim their
refund so they can seize control of their funds.
This is the largest refund in U.S. history. Billions of dollars are
still unclaimed, and the vast majority of low-income people have yet to
claim their refund. This is important information the media needs to get
out to people.
Individuals and families can claim a standard refund of up to $60
without paperwork, based on exemptions: $30 for one, $40 for two, $50
for three and $60 for four or more.
The money owed to the people was taken through an illegal federal excise
tax on long-distance and bundled telephone service. In 2006, the tax was
discontinued after a court ruled it illegal. Many people who do not pay
income taxes—low-income families and retirees—and are in most need of
these funds must file a special form, 1040 EZ-T, in order to claim their
money. This refund is commonly due to anyone who paid for a landline,
wireless, or Voice Internet Protocol phone service between February 28,
2003 and August 1, 2006. The 1040 EZ-T can be downloaded from the
